How often have you found yourself stressing over what to bring to a big family gathering? You spend more time worrying than enjoying the celebration! The holidays are busy enough without the added pressure of finding the perfect crowd-pleasing appetizer. Over the years, through countless family get-togethers and festive parties, I’ve discovered a few standout recipes that are sure to impress your guests and might even become a new holiday favorite. Trust me—someone will definitely ask for the recipe! So, consider “appetizer for family gathering” officially checked off your to-do list. Relax, and let these delicious suggestions help you truly enjoy your holiday festivities!

Let’s dive into the delicious lineup:

This Loaded Hummus recipe from Taste, Love & Nourish is so good, I’m making it tonight for our Brown Family Gathering. For a little extra flair, pick up some high-quality Castelvetrano and Greek olives—preferably from the olive bar (my little slice of heaven!). One pro tip: lightly toss the tomatoes and chickpeas in extra virgin olive oil before placing them on the platter. It makes them shimmer like they’re dressing up for the party too!

Years ago, I stumbled upon a Smoked Salmon Spread recipe by Tricia Yearwood and thought she was a genius for turning classic ingredients into a flavorful dip. Though I misplaced that recipe, this version from Once Upon a Chef nails it. Capers and dill are must-haves! I love leaving the dip chunky for texture, but feel free to whip it smooth if that’s your style

Living in Northeast Ohio’s snow belt, we Akronites know how to cure our winter blues. This Shrimp Ceviche recipe from iFoodReal.com is part of my personal Ohio Winter Survival Guide. While the recipe calls for cooking the shrimp in lime juice, I prefer roasting them. Toss the shrimp in olive oil, salt, and pepper, roast at 400°F for five minutes, and let them cool before mixing with the fresh ingredients. One bite will transport you to summer! This Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus  recipe by George Duran from the Food Network is a family favorite, especially for guests watching their carbs. It’s perfect for those who are diabetic or gluten/dairy intolerant. Don’t skip the balsamic glaze and fleur de sel for a finishing touch. Pro tip: For a large gathering, double the recipe to keep everyone happy.

Inspired by one of my favorite Akron restaurants, Crave, this Fire Roasted Tomato & Goat Cheese Spread is now a staple in my home. I always keep fire-roasted tomatoes and goat cheese on hand for this quick appetizer. If you’re hosting, serve it in a fondue pot to keep it warm—its shallow sides make dipping easier than a crockpot.

A recipe if you’re in a race against time! Years ago, my friend Jody introduced me to these Salami-Cream Cheese Bites. Although she doesn’t recall making them (and insists it was her mom), I found this yummy recipe from The Kitchen is My Playground. It’s retro, simple, and pop-in-your-mouth delicious. If you’re short on time but can make a quick Aldi run, this is the appetizer for you!

This Sausage Star recipe is a must-try! I begged my sister Kelly to make them for her annual Christmas party, and they were a hit—I think I ate 10! The combination of sausage, olives, ranch, and green peppers is addictive. For a gluten-free option, use Tostitos Scoops instead of wonton wrappers. They’re smaller, so you’ll have even more to enjoy.

Another Kelly favorite, these Mushroom-Bacon Triangle from Pepperidge Farm are a classic. Even mushroom skeptics are converted after one bite. While I’m not a fan of thyme, I don’t dare change a thing—this recipe is perfection. The slightly retro photo on the recipe is proof it’s been a favorite for years!

Our extended family’s recipe collection wouldn’t be complete without Musubi. Introduced by my nephew-in-law Jae, this “Spam sushi” raised some eyebrows at first. But trust me—it’s a fun, kid-friendly recipe that’s surprisingly delicious. My kids call it “Spushi” and absolutely love it and enjoy making it too.

As you plan your next gathering, let these recipes take the stress out of your appetizer prep and add a little extra joy to the table. Whether you’re aiming for nostalgia, simplicity, or a bold new flavor, these crowd-pleasers are sure to delight your guests and spark conversations. From retro bites to modern favorites, each recipe has a story—and now, they can become part of yours. Here’s to making memories, sharing laughter, and savoring every delicious moment this season brings! Let the festivities (and compliments) begin!
