Holly’s Story
A Journey from Military Service to Counseling: Supporting Marriage, Trauma, and Healing
Life has a way of shaping us through both triumphs and trials. For me, the journey to becoming a counselor has been marked by resilience, service, and personal transformation. From serving in the Army National Guard and working as a corrections officer, to walking through my own seasons of heartbreak and healing, I’ve seen how pain can both break us down and build us up. Those experiences didn’t just prepare me for this career — they gave me a deep compassion for others who are carrying burdens that often go unseen.
Finding My Path in Counseling
I am currently completing my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Phoenix. My approach is rooted in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which emphasizes the healing power of safe, secure emotional connections. I believe true growth begins when we feel seen, heard, and understood — both by others and by ourselves.
A Career Built on Service and Resilience

Before becoming a counselor, I spent over a decade as a corrections officer in an adult male prison and have proudly served in the Army National Guard for more than 23 years, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Management and worked as a licensed nursing home administrator for several years. These diverse experiences gave me a deep respect for resilience, trauma, and the silent struggles people carry.
How My Own Story Lead Me to Counseling
But what truly led me to counseling was my own story. Like many, I’ve walked through heartbreak, divorce, and painful relationship patterns. I’ve had to learn the hard way how to communicate, break cycles, and rediscover my own voice — often without the support I needed at the time. Those struggles, as difficult as they were, became a turning point. They humbled me, shaped me, and ultimately led me to this path of walking alongside others with authenticity, compassion, and hope.
Life in the Military and Marriage
My husband and I, together, share nearly 50 years of combined military service. We know firsthand the toll of long separations, the strain of deployments, and the challenges of “coming home” to normal life without enough support. These experiences have deepened my heart for individuals and couples carrying invisible burdens — whether from military life, relationship struggles, or the weight of unresolved emotional pain.
My Commitment as a Counselor-in-Training
As a counselor-in-training, my goal is to create a safe and supportive space where clients can explore their emotional patterns, reconnect with themselves, and move toward healing. If you’re ready to take the next step — whether that’s navigating relationship challenges, facing the weight of past trauma, or learning to find your voice again — I’d be honored to walk alongside you. Healing is possible, and together we can begin that journey.
