From Conflict to Connection

Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples: What It Is and Why It Works

Relationships can be one of life’s greatest sources of joy, but they can also be incredibly challenging. Many couples struggle with communication, trust, and intimacy.  When these issues persist, they can lead to frustration, resentment, and even separation. The good news is that there’s a proven, research-backed therapy approach designed to help couples rebuild emotional bonds and create lasting connection: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

At Married Life Counseling in Akron, Ohio, we specialize in EFT to help couples strengthen their relationships. We serve Akron, Hudson, Bath, Medina, Green, and the surrounding areas, and we also offer virtual therapy options for couples who prefer online sessions. If you’re looking for a highly effective marriage counseling method that goes beyond surface-level fixes, keep reading to learn more about EFT and how it can transform your relationship.

What Is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a structured, research-based approach to couples counseling developed by Dr. Sue Johnson in the 1980s. EFT is grounded in attachment theory, which suggests that humans are wired for deep emotional bonds. When these bonds feel threatened—due to conflict, betrayal, or emotional distance—partners often react in negative cycles that deepen disconnection.

EFT focuses on helping couples identify and change these negative patterns while strengthening their emotional connection. Instead of just addressing surface-level conflicts, EFT works to create a more secure and trusting bond between partners.

EFT’s Proven Success Rate

Research has consistently shown that EFT is one of the most effective forms of couples therapy. Studies indicate that:

  • 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery through EFT.
  • 90% of couples report significant improvements in their relationship.
  • EFT is effective across different cultures, ages, and relationship challenges.

How EFT Differs from Other Couples Therapy Approaches

There are many different approaches to couples therapy, but EFT stands out because it focuses on emotional safety and deep relational healing. Here’s how it compares to other well-known methods:

EFT vs. The Gottman Method

The Gottman Method emphasizes practical conflict resolution techniques, such as improving communication and understanding relationship dynamics. Some of our therapists at Married Life are Gottman trained and all of us use their resources, in addition to our EFT focus. While these skills are practical and useful, they don’t always address the root cause of emotional disconnection. EFT, on the other hand, helps couples identify emotional needs and repair attachment bonds, leading to deeper and more lasting change.

EFT vs. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is commonly used in individual therapy and focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. While it can be applied to couples therapy, CBT often overlooks the underlying emotional responses driving conflict. We’ve noticed that when we change our thoughts and behaviors, we will often see temporary change, maybe for a week or two.  EFT, however, prioritizes emotional healing, helping partners feel safe, heard, and valued in their relationship. When we address the core emotions that drive thoughts and behaviors, we are more likely to see long term change.  Sue Johnson once said, “Emotions are the key agent to lasting change.”

Why EFT Works Better for Many Couples

Unlike other therapy approaches that focus on communication skills or behavior changes, EFT helps partners understand their emotional needs and fears, leading to more profound and lasting improvements in their relationship.  As human beings, our core needs center around experiencing love and connection with others. We long to know that at least one other person sees us, takes time to listen and understands us, and genuinely loves us.

The Three Stages of EFT Therapy with Examples

As EFT therapists, we are committed to helping you “graduate” from therapy. So, with that,  we consider ourselves “experiential” counselors.  We will actually practice communicating more effectively in session so that couples will be more effective at home. EFT follows a structured process that unfolds in three key stages:

1. De-escalation:

  • Couples identify the negative cycle causing distress.
  • Partners begin to recognize how their behaviors influence emotional distance.
  • Example: Sarah and Mark constantly argue over small issues. Through EFT, they recognize that Mark shuts down emotionally when Sarah raises concerns, making her feel unheard. Once they identify this pattern, they work together to de-escalate conflicts before they spiral.

2. Restructuring interactions:

  • Couples express deeper emotional needs in a supportive way.
  • The therapist guides them in creating new, positive patterns of interaction.
  • Example: Instead of getting defensive, Mark learns to express his fear of disappointing Sarah, while Sarah reassures him of her commitment. This shift strengthens their emotional bond.

3. Consolidation and integration:

  • Couples reinforce their new emotional connection.
  • They apply these changes in everyday life, leading to lasting relationship improvement.
  • Example: Over time, Sarah and Mark find themselves naturally using the tools learned in therapy, leading to deeper trust and emotional security.
Case Studies: How Emotionally Focused Therapy Helps Couples

Case Study 1: Rebuilding Trust After Infidelity

John and Lisa had been married for 12 years when Lisa discovered John had an emotional affair. Devastated, she struggled to trust him, and he felt immense guilt but didn’t know how to repair the damage. Through EFT:

  • They worked through Lisa’s feelings of betrayal and fear of abandonment.
  • John learned how to validate Lisa’s pain without defensiveness.
  • Over time, they rebuilt emotional intimacy and restored trust, emerging stronger than before.

Case Study 2: Overcoming Constant Conflict

Mike and Emily argued about everything—from finances to parenting styles. The resentment was so high that they barely spoke without tension. Through EFT:

  • They identified their negative cycle: Emily felt neglected when Mike withdrew, and Mike withdrew when Emily expressed frustration.
  • They learned to approach conflicts with understanding rather than blame.
  • By strengthening their emotional bond, their arguments became less frequent and more constructive.

Why Choose EFT for Marriage Counseling?

On a personal note, I, Christie, along with my husband, Mike, have engaged with more than a dozen different counselors as well as various workshops, retreats and intensives.  You could say that we’ve done it all, and we practically have! While each counselor was well intentioned, and we experienced minor improvements on occasion, our most significant marital improvements began when we engaged in an EFT Hold Me Tight Weekend.  Addressing communication tactics and setting goals for behavior change barely scratch the surface when addressing deep desires for love, emotional safety, and security in relationships.  Engaging in therapy that targets your emotions is your best chance for the help and healing you’re looking for.

If you and your partner are struggling with your relationship, EFT can help in the following ways:

  • Highly Effective for Couples in Distress
    • Backed by decades of research with proven success rates, EFT has helped thousands of couples restore their emotional bonds and intimacy.
  • Addresses Underlying Issues, Not Just Surface Conflicts
    • Instead of focusing only on arguments, EFT helps couples recognize and change negative interaction cycles, strengthening their connection at the core.
  • Works for a Variety of Relationship Challenges
    • EFT can help with infidelity recovery, trust issues, communication breakdowns, and emotional distance.
  • Even Strong Relationships Can Benefit from EFT
    • EFT isn’t just for couples in crisis. It can also help strong relationships grow even deeper, improving sexual and emotional intimacy and preventing future conflicts.
